Coretta Scott King Book Awards

The awards were founded in 1969 in order to promote minority writers, with the first author awarded the prize in 1970. Awards for illustrators were added in 1974.

About the Coretta Scott King Book Awards

Given annually to outstanding African American authors and illustrators of books for children and  young adults that demonstrate an appreciation of African American culture and universal human values.  Commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and honors his wife, Mrs. Coretta Scott King.
