Spur Awards

Western Writers of America annually honors writers for distinguished writing about the American West with the Spur Awards.  They have been awarded since 1953.

Categories have changed over the years since 1953.  Originally there were only five categories and of those only three dealt with books.  Over the years categories were added, names changed, and some categories dropped.  By 2022 there were 18 categories, including best song, best screenplay, and so on.  Of those eighteen categories there are thirteen for books.

When looking under the categories please note the year spans to help you navigate the changes and additions you will find over the years.  The more recent year spans will appear first on the list.
